Ellen | Thomas | Juan | Eloise

Ellen
Ellen is a 44 year old woman supporting two children. She was beaten by her boyfriend recently and needed care. Hope connected her with a community health center.

Thomas
Thomas is a single 36 year old male who could not work because of a knee injury which occurred when helping friends move. Thomas works in the construction industry. Thomas was brought to our attention by someone attending a support group that he voluntarily facilitated through his church. Hope was able to get Thomas connect with a health center; obtain the knee surgery he needed and medications. Thomas is back to work now.

Juan
Juan visited the emergency room four times over the past few months for asthma attacks. Juan could not afford to pay for his medication and was not eligible for insurance through his employers because he works part time in two jobs. Juan supports a household of five on a $30,000 income; he also cares for his parents. Juan decides daily what bills he can pay between the rent, food, clothing and Christmas on the way, Juan just didn't have enough money for medicine so he cut his doses in half, thinking a little was better than nothing. Hope connected Juan to a community health center and in turn Hope's pharmacy. Juan is now getting the medicine he needs at a cost he can afford and is being followed for his condition.

Eloise
Eloise lives with and supports two children, she has just been notified that the children are no longer eligible to participate in Kids Connection, the state's health insurance plan for those in need. Eloise is tired, she works long hours as a waitress in a neighborhood pizza restaurant. She has not been eating well lately and when she does eat she gets severe pain in her stomach, she is not sleeping well either. She is worried about her children and how she will pay for food and obtain winter boots and coats for her children. Eloise has been putting off going for help, but she has missed work four times in the past four weeks and her employer's absence policy will only allow her one more absence over the next two months. A friend convinced her to go to the health center, where she has been seen a few times for the same problem, but there is little improvement. The health center referred Eloise to Hope to see a specialist. Hope arranged the appointment, an interpreter and transportation. After some tests and changes in medication regime, Eloise is feeling better now and has not missed work.
